Dart Quenching Shield Expansion by Jim Croft

You’ve got your day planned out. Your priorities have been set in orderly progression from most important to least. Then suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, a project gets bogged down with complications that should be easily overcome, but aren’t. Or, you’re feeling chipper about life and your mood quickly digresses into unexplainable discouragement and perhaps even depression.

The scenarios might be manifestations of routine elements of evil that Jesus said would accompany everyday life. (Matt 6:34) It’s also possible that you’re experiencing the consequences of word storms against you generated by the conversations and prayers of known and unknown people. This article is about finding safe haven from stormy weather words. What you need is an expansion of your dart quenching shield to include an umbrella of protection from word storms.

The Old Testament speaks of the strife and scourge of those who smite with the tongue. (Psa 31:20; Job 5:21; Jer 18:18) The New Testament follows through with the theme in the 6th Chapter of Ephesians. It speaks of the fiery darts of the wicked that can be quenched by the shield of faith, the Word of God. Satanic entities hurl fiery darts like javelin to impale our health, prosperity, progress in Kingdom projects and our relationships. There is another type of darts that are shot like arrows from unexpected bow wielding sources.

Bows & Arrows

Most believers are familiar with the concept that there is death and life in the power of the tongue. (Prov 18:21) There is a need to understand how the powers of death are delivered to all that is holy and profitable.

The delivery system is the human tongue and lips that have bow like capacity. The arrows are poisoned words of negativity and hostility. King David spoke of this in the Psalms.

He identified the gritted teeth of his enemies as spears and swords; and their bitter words as arrows. (Psa 57:4, 64:2-5) The analogy is that the human mouth is the launching pad of spiritual weapons. The fiery arrows are not restricted to direct frontal assaults that can be deflected by a shield when seen coming. More often than not, the contemptuous word darts are shot in secret.

In ancient times arrows were used as a form of artillery. Barrages of hundreds of arrows were shot with an upward trajectory to rain down on enemies. An arrow from above could strike in unprotected areas such as the neck, shoulders, lower legs and areas in between those sheltered by shields and other protective armor.

That is a depiction of what happens when word storms afflict a child of God. The barrages are launched in critical conversations and by the content of soulish prayers.

Religiosity Chief Culprit

Biblical spirituality is beautiful. Religion that has mutated into religiosity can be downright dangerous. Mutation is spawned when believers congregate around the variables of the faith rather than its absolutes. Christianity has very few absolutes and almost infinite nonessential variables.

The absolutes are outlined in the Apostle’s and Nicene Creeds. Examples of variables of belief are formulas for baptism; the timing of the Second Coming; and the like. Religiosity compels believers to gang up in critical conversations about a fellow Christian suspected of not holding a pet belief. It’s unbecoming that people are assessed by what they believe rather than by evidence of godly fruit in their lives

The critical conversations often take place in the context of a Christian feeling that they need to justify their reasons for hopping from one group to the next. I know of a church that like most had a revolving door. Congregates considered members frequently exited after brief stays. The church fluctuated between 100 and 150 in attendance and calculated that 35,000 people had exited over a twenty-year period.
It’s hard to imagine how many negative word arrow bombardments rained down on that church’s pastor and leadership team as 35,000 people went separate ways into new churches. It’s no wonder that the pastor finally resigned.

None of us like to think that relatives and work associates say uncharitable things behind our backs. Nevertheless, we all know they do. Occasional negative observations are not the problem. The problem is when our supposed weaknesses become the fodder for regular covert chewing sessions. It’s then that fiery darts complicate our activities and have potential to wound our peace of mind and physical health.

Soulish Prayers

Most Christians welcome offers from believers to pray for them. That is well and good when prayers reflect the Spirit inspired aspirations of the prayed for individual. The prayers can be harmful if they are soulish. The term describes prayers that focus on the personal agenda within the intercessor’s soul about how someone else ought to function in given aspects of faith and life.

The prayers are soulish when they aren’t in keeping with Gods will or that of the individual about their own life. Such prayers are apt to confuse direction about choices that God delegates to personal preference. Whom to marry; choice of vocation; and doctrinal views are common agenda items injected by force.

There is another form of prayer that purposely sends billions of poisoned arrows to wreak mayhem in Christian lives every day. It’s the Salat, the 5 times daily prayers of the world’s 2 billion Muslims.

There is reference to hypocrites in each Islamic prayer session. Muslims recognize that the inference is based on verses from the 63rd Surah (chapter) of the Koran and on the sayings of Mohammed found in the Hadith. The hypocrites are Christians.
The verses describe Christians as lying hypocrites that have taken oaths in defiance of Islam. The mention of oaths is in reference to confessions of Christ at conversion. The Koran prescribes that Christians are to be regarded as enemies whose rejection of Mohammed’s Allah cannot be forgiven. Their destruction is called for by the hands of Allah.

It would be difficult to overstate the global harm that Salat prayers possibly inflict billions of times daily. The word storms they create have potential to bewilder the pursuits of Christians. Considering that America is considered Christian, it is no wonder that our government is plagued with hypocritical and confusing policies.

Sheltering Umbrella Shield

Believers aren’t to be given to fearful superstitions about anything. Yet, when life becomes unusually complicated with varying sorts of hardships it’s good to activate the shields that the Bible implies are available to us. Here are some suggestions about what to do when emotional state, relationships, business matters, and physical health suddenly go awry.

1) Like the Psalmist, pray that you will be sheltered by God’s presence away from the strife of tongues. (Psa 31:20)

2) In ancient times when an advancing army encountered rain down of enemy arrows, they would cluster with their shields held over their heads. You can do this in 2 ways. See yourself momentarily crouched with your shield of faith held over your head. Quote Scriptures that speak of God’s protection from assaults. It is also beneficial to by faith envision yourself as one with the worldwide Body of Christ. Picture that all have their shields held over their heads. Confess that you are protected by the umbrella of protection of their confessions of the Word and by their prayers in unknown tongues. When believers pray in tongues, they are praying for matters beyond that obvious to their minds and 5 senses. (Rom 8:26-27) Unquestionably, the Holy Spirit often inserts protective prayers from attacks.

3) When told that someone wants to add you to their prayer list, subtly give them an outline of the type of prayers you welcome. Tell them that you like for people to pray for you that can genuinely thank God for all that you represent. Ask them to pray in agreement with whatever God has revealed to you as his will for you. Say that you want to avoid the pressures created by people praying for their perception of the Lord’s agenda for particular aspects of your life.

Some readers are aware that I ghostwrite articles and books for the ministries of X-Muslim to Muslims. One day my computer was giving me fits as I was writing an article. It occurred to me that the perplexity was caused by barrages of arrows shot by the ill intentions of radicals Muslims for me.

I placed myself in God’s presence away from the scourge of their tongues. I saw myself under the protective umbrella of believers who love and pray for my welfare; and that of saints throughout the world who were unknowingly interceding for me in the Spirit. The computer glitch instantly passed and I joyfully pounded out the article. Amen!

Impartation of the Anointing

Scripture says we can receive the anointing through “impartation”.  While impartation is biblical and very real, there are different kinds of impartations.  In the orginal Koine Greek, impartation is metadidomi (met-ad-id'-o-mee) meaning ‘to give over’ or ‘to share’. When you consider this meaning of impartation it seems more understandable in biblical terms.

For example, in Romans 1:11-12 (NKJV) Paul writes:

For I long to see you, that I may impart {#3330 Strong)} to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established — that is, that I may be encouraged together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.

Note that Paul states quite clearly that the impartation of ‘some spiritual gift’ leads to being established. This also rather implies that, since the impartation of a gift yields establishment, without the impartation there is no establishment, or at least not a full establishment in ministry.

Let’s look at different ways of imparting.

Impartation by Laying on of Hands

One form of impartation, and probably the most common, is through the laying on of hands.  In fact, this is an official symbolic act in the Old Testament and New Testament and is still used as part of the ordination ceremony for Pastors and Ministers.

In The Old Testament
Laying on of hands in the Old Testament was an act of blessing or setting apart for God’s use.

Genesis 48:14-15 (NKJV) tells us:

Then Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraim's head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh's head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn.  And he blessed Joseph.  It was a ritual of sacrifice and transference of sin.

Likewise, Exodus 29:10-11 explains:

"You shall also have the bull brought before the tabernacle of meeting, and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands on the head of the bull.

*This scripture also demonstrates that the laying on of hands isn’t just for humans but that it can be applied to any living thing.

Leviticus 16:20-21 states:

Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, concerning all their sins, putting them on the head of the goat...  It was an act of setting apart for consecration for service.

In Numbers 8:10, it states:

So you shall bring the Levites before the LORD, and the children of Israel shall lay their hands on the Levites;

In The New Testament

The laying on of hands in the New Testament was done for three purposes: 1) to receive the impartation of the Holy Spirit (2) to impart healing or (3) to cast out demons.

NOTE: Contradictory to popular belief, it is an extremely rare thing for a demon to transfer from one person to another by laying on of hands. There must be some form of an invitation or ‘opening’ from the person being inhabited by the demon in order for the demon to enter. Not that this never happens but it is certainly nothing for the person doing the delivering to be concerned with. Jesus is the ultimate example of how to cast out demons and He laid His hands on the demonized on numerous occasions in the Bible.

Further, we have been given authority over demons by Christ himself and I believe that we have His protection when we follow His lead in doing as He commanded His disciples to do. In fact, when Jesus sent the twelve out, He gave them authority over two things: to cast out demons and to heal every kind of disease (Matthew 10:1; Mark 6:7 and Luke 9:1).

Take note that Jesus didn’t say “watch out now and be careful because those nasty old demons can jump out of the person you’re casting it out of and jump right into you!” No, He didn’t. In John 14:12 Jesus tells His disciples that when He is gone they will do everything He had done and even greater things. This includes the laying on of hands to impart gifts, heal the sick and cast out demons.

Acts 8:15-17

Who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.  For as yet He had fallen upon none of them.  They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit

Acts 19:6

And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

Mark 16:17-18

“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover

Mark 6:13

And they cast out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them.”

"One effect of laying on hands is that of being "slain in the Spirit". This happens when the power of God is so great that it actually sweeps a person off their feet. The purpose of this is two-fold: to demonstrate to the person that they are not in control - God is - and, once on the floor, to minister to them individually. This can be one of the most powerful and life altering experiences - to have God minister to you in a way that takes you totally out of the picture and makes you a very captive audience to just receive what He has for you! I have been on both sides of this phenomenon, the instrument giving the impartation as well as the one receiving it, and it can be a glorious experience! In addition, the person being slain doesn't even have to be physically touched. I've seen people slain from 20 feet away." ~ Mark Williams

The Anointing is Transferred Through Contact

Luke 8:43-47 (NASB) gives us a perfect example of this simple lesson.

And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped. And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched Me?” And while they were all denying it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing in on You.” But Jesus said, “Someone did touch Me, for I was aware that power had gone out of Me.”  When the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before Him, and declared in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed.

In this scripture we can very clearly see that the touch doesn’t have to be skin on skin at all, but can simply be a piece of cloth that the anointed person has worn. In this case it was the Tallit, or Jewish prayer shawl, that Jesus (and every Jewish man) wore on the outside of their clothes or robes. It was actually the tassles, or Tzit Tzit, of the Tallit that the woman touched – nowhere near Jesus skin but simply worn by Him! (See also Matthew 14:36 )

The Tallit with the tassles, or tzit-tzit, which the bleeding woman would have touched.

If you carry the anointing, when someone accidently bumps into you in public places, you should think (or even say) “In the Name of Jesus!!!” That way if the Lord wants to give something to them, He may.

Anointing is Transferred Through Corporate Impartation

In the case of Saul in the OT, when he mingled with the prophets, he received the same prophetic spirit to prophesy.

1 Samuel 10:6-13

Then the Spirit of the LORD will come upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.  And let it be, when these signs come to you, that you do as the occasion demands; for God is with you.  You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and surely I will come down to you to offer burnt offerings and make sacrifices of peace offerings.  Seven days you shall wait, till I come to you and show you what you should do." So it was, when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, that God gave him another heart; and all those signs came to pass that day.  When they came there to the hill, there was a group of prophets to meet him; then the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.  And it happened, when all who knew him formerly saw that he indeed prophesied among the prophets , that the people said to one another, "What is this that has come upon the son of Kish?  Is Saul also among the prophets ?" Then a man from there answered and said, "But who is their father?" Therefore it became a proverb: "Is Saul also among the prophets ?" And when he had finished prophesying, he went to the high place.

When Cathie is teaching the School of the Prophets, there is a corporate anointing to prophesy.  The spirit of the prophets stirs up the prophetic gifting and it is very easy for her to prophesy on demand in that setting (or any setting really) and find open heaven hearing / seeing.

Anointing is Transferred Through Distance

The anointing can be transferred through distance by just speaking the mighty Word of God or the name of Jesus.  When I watch an anointed service on TV or online, for example every Friday night with Mahesh Chavda (, when I hear the Word of God loosed, and the Holy Spirit falls, I receive His tangible anointing and can physically feel the Spirit wash over me!  That is awesome!

Early on in my (Mark) ministry I was asked to pray for a sick woman some 1,500 miles away. She was in very bad health and needed a heart bypass but the doctors didn’t want to do the surgery because she was too weak. I had her anoint herself with oil while I prayed over her. I had her lay her hands on her heart where the healing needed to take place and prayed over the phone as I would if she was physically right in front of me. The next day the complication was gone and she was healed. The Lord’s presence can be sent through a prayer in a telephone call. There is no distance in God!

Matthew 8:8-11 is a perfect example of how God heals long distance.

But the centurion said, “Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel. I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven;  but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed that very moment.

The Anointing is Transferred When Glory Falls From Heaven

Glory cloud of gold dust

Acts 2:2-4 describes what happens when the Glory falls.
And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

Exodus 40:34-35 gives us an Old Testament example of the Glory falling:
Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.  Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

 2 Chronicles 5:13-14
in unison when the trumpeters and the singers were to make themselves heard with one voice to praise and to glorify the Lord, and when they lifted up their voice accompanied by trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and when they praised the Lord saying, “He indeed is good for His lovingkindness is everlasting,” then the house, the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.

This scripture also illustrates that the Glory of the Lord can be called down from heaven through praise and worship - this is extremely powerful!
Impartation Through Anointing Oil

Oil that has been set aside and consecrated unto the Lord for His purposes can be used to impart His anointing. We are never without at least one bottle of anointing oil and anoint ourselves at least twice daily, when we begin my day and when we end it. There is protection and power in anointing oil – and as long as you carry an anointing yourself, you can bless your own EVOO (extra-virgin olive oil) and use it. We only use EVOO because it is the purest of olive oils.

Exodus 30:25-32

You shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony,  and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, and the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its stand. You shall also consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be holy. You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister as priests to Me. You shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. It shall not be poured on anyone’s body, nor shall you make any like it in the same proportions; it is holy, and it shall be holy to you.

Isaiah 10:27

It shall come to pass in that day that his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil

James 5:14-16

Is any sick among you?  let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.  Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.  The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

In March of this year (2013) we were involved in a deliverance/healing in which a woman was in a coma and dying. Her doctors had totally given up on her – but God had not. We were asked to go to the hospital to pray for her by her family of non-believers. We anointed her with oil, we anointed the door frame with oil, we anointed the bed with oil and we anointed every single family member that chose to stick around to see what was up. We started to cast out the spirit of infirmity in her (she had the same bleeding disorder as the woman in Matthew 9:20) and the presense of the Lord was so thick that at one point I looked over to see the entire family huddled in a corner of the room, shaking and crying. They had never experienced the power of God before – and it changed them forever. The woman woke up and wanted food…hallelujah!

The Anointing is Imparted Through Belongings  of Anointed Persons

This is especially true of articles of clothing and there are several examples in the Bible.

Matthew 14:36

and they implored Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were cured.

ELIJAH’S MANTLE (Most likely also a Tallit)

2 Kings 2:14

Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, “Where is the LORD God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.

Exodus 17:5-6

And the LORD said to Moses ,"Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel.  Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go.  Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink."

Acts 19:11-13

Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.

2 Kings 4:29

Then Elisha said to Gehazi, “Get ready to travel; take my staff and go!  Don’t talk to anyone along the way.  Go quickly and lay the staff on the child’s face.”

PETER’S SHADOW (Yes, his shadow!)

Acts 5:15-16

As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by.

2 Kings 13:21

Once when some Israelites were burying a man, they spied a band of these raiders.  So they hastily threw the body they were burying into the tomb of Elisha.  But as soon as the body touched Elisha’s bones, the dead man revived and jumped to his feet!  I have waved glory ring and/or flags in worship and people have experienced His tangible anointing.  Twice I witnessed people receiving deliverance in this.

Mark’s mentor, Jim Croft, a highly anointed man of God, will actually sleep with someone’s article of clothing then return it to a relative that it might be returned to the owner who receives the anointing through the clothing. This was basically the practice of Paul with his work aprons. It is believed that his sweat would further enhance the anointing.

The anointing from God is something very real and even though today, like so many other things, there are still those that do not believe in it at all (I know, can you believe it?). They are missing out on what God has for them. The last thing I want to hear from God when I arrive in heaven is this: “I had all this for you but you didn’t believe my word? You thought that everything that I promised you in my Word was only for the original, first century disciples? Shame on you!”

Of course, you don't need a person at all to give you the anointing. Neither of us did. If you are truly sincere, totally sold out and unquestionably obedient pray and ask God to anoint you. The Holy Spirit will do the rest.

May The Blood of Jesus cover, bless & protect you!
